New forum gives platform to local artists
The main purpose of the forum is to give local artist a platform to showcase their talent and give them exposure.
KwaThema – The community of KwaThema came together on Tuesday at the KwaThema Community Hall to celebrate local talent while officially launching the Instika Yaba-Bumbi Arts Forum.

Chairperson of the forum Bongimusa Twala, who is also a poet, actor, visual artist and motivational speaker, says art is a creative way of earning an income.

“What we aim to achieve is to give exposure to local artists, starting at home, while also ensuring that they gain hands-on experience. We also provide a platform for artists to keep practicing and sharpening their skills and craft.
It is a well-known factor that we do not have enough facilities which are able to accommodate us as KwaThema artists,” says Twala.
The event consisted of drummers, sketches, dancers, music artists, maskandi singers, visual arts and fine arts and photography.
There were no age restrictions, as children as young as five years old were also given the platform to showcase their talent.

The non-profit organisation raised funds through internal donations to be able to host the event.
Which was one of the reasons they could not cater for all Kwatsaduza artists.
“Initially, we wanted all the Kwatsaduza artists to come and celebrate with us, but, unfortunately, we could not.
“But the next event which will be held in March, we are going all out and we want the entire Kwatsaduza to join in.
“In the meantime, we will be trying to raise funds,” he adds.

A drummer from 1575, Sifiso Modikoe, says: “Such initiatives are very important especially for us artists. They give us faith and hope to never stop believing in what we do and for us to take it very seriously.
“The exposure we get here is a stepping stone into the right direction.”
