Tricky ties

Football is full of surprises, but Africa has almost, always been represented by the same nations in the FIFA World Cup. We will be looking closely at some huge ties in the group stages and, with only five slots up for grabs, it promises to be a tight affair.

All eyes will be on Group D in the group stages, with giants Cameroon and Ivory Coast facing each other. The two powerhouses have represented the continent on the global scene on several occasions, and each will be looking to top the group to advance to the penultimate phase.

Nigeria face fast-rising Cape Verde in a tricky Group C match. Bookies like Betway will fancy the Super Eagles, but the recent showings by the islanders cannot go unnoticed. The two sides are poised to fight for the top spot against Central African Republic and Liberia.

Egypt have surprisingly failed to stamp their African dominance in the recent past, save for the last appearance in Russia, but they are expected to top group F if the likes of Mo Salah and co can rise to the occasion. Angola and Gabon will be no push-overs.

Ghana have not been at their best recently, and missing the last edition should have worked as a wake-up call. They face South Africa in a two-legged affair that should definitely determine the direction of the group.

Other favorites, according to Betway, are Sebegal and Morocco, who have been pooled in relatively easier groups. African Footballer of the Year Sadio Mane will lead his nation against fellow West Africans Togo, Namibia, and Congo, while Morocco is expected to finish ahead of Guinea in Group I.

Mali face a combined East African opposition in the hands of Uganda, Kenya and lowly placed Rwanda in Group E, with the only Group without a previous World Cup finalist comprised of DR Congo, Madagascar, Benin, and Tanzania in Group J.

Pundits will be looking at the possible surprises going into the penultimate stage and Betway will feature all these group matches for their customers.
