Women urged to be extra vigilant as reported rape cases increase in Kwa-Thema

Kwa-Thema – Police in Kwa-Thema are urging women in the areas of Rest in Peace, Masimini, Tornado and White City to be extra vigilant after five cases of rape were reported over the weekend. Kwa-Thema police spokesperson Sgt Media Khoza said the victims are aged between 20 and 40. “The areas have been identified as hot spots and women are advised to never walk alone in these areas and avoid crossing through open areas, especially at night.

“The rapists are still at large and are being sought by police. “Victims of rape can also help with the investigation by preserving evidence and it is important to immediately report a rape case. “This will ensure that adequate forensic evidence is taken and the victim can get medical and trauma assistance as soon as possible,” she said.

Khoza said violence against women and children can be ended through a collective approach and men are therefore urged to protect women and work with police to curb sexual offences.
