In an effort to encourage women to talk about women and child abuse, social workers from Far East Rand Hospital and its crisis centre hosted a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness event on Tuesday.
The hospital also partnered with Siyabonga Africa, Forensic Health Services, Ubuhle Bamadoda and Lakhanya Ilanga Youth Development Programme from Tsakani.
Welcoming everyone, acting clinical director Dr Nthabiseng Makgana said GBV is an enemy that required the community to fight together.
She encouraged women to talk about GBV.

“Report abuse to the social workers, and our crisis centre is here to assist you,” said Makgana.
Lehlohonolo Kutoane, founder of Lakhanya Ilanga Youth Development Programme, encouraged both women and men to talk about abuse.
Kutoane, who spent 10 years in prison, shared his experience of abuse while in prison.

“I never allowed the abuse I experienced in prison to stand in my way of changing my life for the better,” said Kutoane.
He added that despite the abuse he endured in prison, he is proud to now be a professional motivational speaker and a qualified psychologist.

Bafana Masinga from Ubuhle Bamadoda encouraged men to protect women and not abuse them.
“Men should protect women and children and not abuse them,” he said.
He concluded by encouraging men to educate their boy children while they are still young on how to treat women.
