Lunch, goodie bags and sanitary towels for girls

Umsobomvu Primary School learners received treats from Phume Khethang on Tuesday.

Kwa-Thema – Resident Phume Khethang gives back to her community through her girl child initiative.
As part of her belated birthday celebration, Khethang hosted 35 schoolgirls last Friday at Ziba Park, where each child received a goodie bag containing school shoes, three packs of sanitary towels, a toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant.
On Tuesday she continued with her generous spirit by visiting Umsobomvu Primary School, where 10 young girls were on the receiving end.
Khethang is a salesperson in the hospitality industry, a member of the Calvary Bible Church in Kwa-Thema and a cast member of a new reality show which is set to debut on national television on February 19.

“I’ve had this idea since 2016 after having a sad encounter with a nine-year-old boy.
“It was raining and he had missed the school bus. He had to walk back home.
“I gave him a lift and as we were driving I noticed he had a dead bird with him. When I asked him about it, he said it was going to be his dinner.
“My heart broke. His name was Bheki,” she explained.

Resident Phume Khethang is passionate about giving back to her community and empowering young girls.

She said she has tried searching for him since, without any luck.
“This is my first formal charity drive and I am doing it out of love, but for me, it started with him and I wish I could find him.”
“I am passionate about children and elderly people,” said Khethang.
She plans to do the drive regularly.

“I received so much support for this drive. There are already people who have shown interest and want to partner with me.
“For this one, I had support from Percy Mike. who sponsored us with food on Friday,” she said.
Khethang emphasised the importance of empowering girls in the community.

Phume Khethang celebrated her belated birthday with a group of learners from Masimini, Zamani and Entokozweni Primary School.

“It is important to have a relationship with a girl child.
“A girl child can uplift her community, support their families, and with a great foundation, they can become a strong well.
“It is important to build great relationships with them from an early age.
“I also offer mentorship to young girls in my community,” she said.
