Interim committee ready to get the ball rolling

The committee was elected in January by the representatives of the different sporting codes in the area.

The fencing at the Zamani Netball Court has been stripped while the grass continues to grow, as pointed out to the African Reporter by Edward Mtshali and Mkhonza Mkhonzana.

Kwa-Thema – The newly formed interim committee for the Kwa-Thema Sports Confederation wants to revive sports in the community.
Committee chairperson Edward Mtshali said while they are looking to establish a permanent structure, children should not be deprived the opportunity to participate in various sporting codes.
The committee was elected in January by representatives of different sporting codes. This is due to the previous committee being inactive.
“Our aim is to have a working committee that will prioritise sport and be able to implement the committee’s visions. We want to bring sport back so that children in our area have something to do with their time,” he explained.

He added that sports facilities are in a poor state and that some people are deprived access to facilities.
“People need to have access to these facilities, as they are there for the people. At the moment, they are not being conducive, as many of them are not even being maintained at all.
“For example, Club Riba used to be one of the best boxing and karate hubs in Kwa-Thema, but it has since been abandoned and vandalised just like the tennis court,” he said.

Zamani Netball Court remains poorly maintained. Mkhonza Mkhonzana is the PRO of the newly elected interim committee of the Kwa-Thema Sports Confederation and Edward Mtshali is the chairperson.

PRO Mkhonza Mkhonzana said the problem is that when renovations are made at these facilities, the committees are not informed.
He also stated that the community must also be held responsible for damages done to the infrastructure.
“We can’t be stealing or damaging property that’s made to benefit us. Therefore, we are pleading with the community to stop vandalising sport facilities.

“We need to work together in order for us to go back to where we used to be sport-wise.
“Sport brings discipline, perseverance, teaches respect and how to handle failure. Which is why we are pleading with schools to also utilise their facilities and allow learners to play sports,” he said.
The committee is encouraging young active people to join their committee and are pleading with local leaders to appoint responsible people who are passionate about sport in their ward committees.
