Learners educated about cancer

Kwa-Thema – Three cancer organisations joined forces to educate learners at Nkabinde Primary School on Friday about the different types of cancers.
CanSurvive Cancer Support, Breast Health Foundation and CHOC, which deals with childhood cancers, partnered to make the day a success.
This was the first cancer campaign hosted in a school to educate children.
Women were attended to by the Breast Health Foundation while men were catered to by Ronnie Nkabinde, the chairperson of CanSurvive, and had their PSA tests conducted by nurses from Kwa-Thema Clinic.

CHOC presenter Zuki Mukwevho took the learners through the various cancers affecting children.
Some of the cancers affecting children include leukemia, brain and spinal cord tumours, neuroblastoma, Wilm’s tumour and bone cancer.
Nkabinde said they decided to move the focus of their cancer education to children.
“Over the years, we were targeting adults, especially men, educating them about prostate cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer.
“We then decided to move our focus to children, as we want them to understand the disease and how it affects them,” he explained.
Nkabinde added he was concerned because a lot of campaigns focus on other illnesses and little light is shone on cancer, yet there is an alarming number of young people who are battling cancer.
