College feeds poor students

Kwa-Thema- Staff members at Ekurhuleni East College’s Kwa-Thema Campus have committed themselves to helping feed struggling students.
They donate non-perishable food items regularly until there is enough to donate to the students.
The initiative was started in 2019 by helping a handful of students, but the number of beneficiaries has grown over the years.
Some of the beneficiaries are identified during psychosocial analysis sessions and referrals by other students.
Staff member Baby More said they have some students between the ages of 16 and 18 who are from child-headed families, while some who are renting cannot afford food.

“We decided to start collecting non-perishable food items which we distribute to the needy students on the list of beneficiaries.
“We recently decided to add a toiletry hamper to cater for both sexes,” she explained.
She added they have received 26 food hampers and toiletry bags from a donor.
The college has a list of 100 students who are waiting to benefit from the initiative, but due to the limited sponsorship, only a few will be assisted.
The campus manager, Thokozile Nkosi, said they are calling on interested donors to reach out to the college.
“All we want is for the students to focus on their studies and not on where their next meal will come from.
“Our wish is to donate the food hampers monthly. We will only achieve this goal if we have external parties donating to the food volt,” she added.
