NPO takes drug campaign to learners
NPO public relations officer Joshua Mzwandile Twala said they are targeting young people as they are the most affected group.
Kwa-Thema – The Masakhane Support Care Centre, an NPO that works with drug addicts, recently held an outreach project aimed at school learners in Kwatsaduza.
They assist drug addicts with counselling, medication and exercises to overcome the addiction.
NPO public relations officer Joshua Mzwandile Twala said they are targeting young people as they are the most affected group.
“Our main focus at the moment is educating young people about the dangers of drugs, especially nyaope.
“We are giving more education on nyaope as it is the drug that seems to be easily available on the streets.
“Our campaign will be ongoing as soon as school resumes,” said Twala.

The NPO is working with the social development department in its fight against drug abuse, and its services are for everyone regardless of age.
“When coming to us for help, we want someone who volunteers and says I am ready to quit and want to change my life.
“We don’t want someone who is being pushed by their families because in such cases they tend to relapse,” said Twala.
Counselling with parents is also offered.
The organisation is planning on taking the campaign to churches as well.
They operate from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 15:00.
Their offices are based at the Kwa-Thema Hall room four.

As part of the drug campaign, they held a soccer and netball tournament between Zithembeni Primary School and Qedusizi Primary School for u-11s and u-13s.
This resulted in Zithembeni winning 3-0 against Qedusizi in the u-11 soccer match, and Qedusizi won 3-0 in the u-13 match.
In netball, Zithembeni won both u-11 and u-13 matches.
Learners from both teams were awarded party packs, medals and trophies.
