Four Mamelong Secondary School learners admitted to hospital after consuming ‘space cookies’
'Space cookies' spell disaster for learners who ate them and for the learner who sold them.
Tsakani – A learner from Mamelong Secondary School has been suspended for selling ‘space cookies’ to fellow learners.
It is alleged four learners on Saturday morning reported being sick and complained of stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.
They later disclosed to teachers they ate space cookies (dagga-infused cookies) they had bought from one of the learners while on their way to Saturday classes.
The learners were rushed to a local hospital for medical attention.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the learner who sold the cookies is facing suspension for breaking the school’s code of conduct and endangering the lives of his fellow learners.

“We are concerned and dissatisfied at the ongoing consumption of these ‘space cakes’ where learners become sick and are often hospitalised.
“We urge learners to refrain from purchasing or consuming unknown substances that put their health and lives at risk,” he explained.
Lesufi added they are monitoring the conditions of the affected learners to ensure their speedy recovery and safe return to their families.
