Tsakani born student the creator behind VUT’s first medical scrubs
Tsakani-born student Nobuhle Nhlapo created VUT's first medical scrubs.

Tsakani – Second-year medical lab science student at Vaal University of Technology, Nobuhle Nhlapo is the brains behind the university’s first medical lab scrubs for the university’s science students.
The 23-year-old-year old from Tsakani developed the scrubs after learning the university didn’t have any.
She explained it didn’t sit well with her that the university didn’t have medical scrubs for their students while other universities did.

“I imagined wearing scrubs while working in the lab. I decided to share the idea with other students and management who gave me the thumbs up for the idea,” she added.
Together with her classmates, the self-taught graphic designer went on a quest to design the scrubs in line with the university’s brand.

“I was fascinated by different diseases and illnesses while in high school. I remember researching Progeria. I knew my future was in the lab and being part of a team coming up with solutions,” she explained.
A fellow student, Tshegofatso Mashabela said the scrubs have provided immense motivation for continuous excellence in education.
Commenting on Buhle’s innovative idea, Prof Christa Grobler said: “We welcomed the proposed initiative and decided to standardise the scrubs as the departmental uniform for both the BHSC: MLS and B nursing students.
“Students wearing these scrubs in the clinical learning facilities will act as VUT brand ambassadors.”
