Correctional services partner with local NPO for Mandela Day
Parolees and addicts give pensioners a clean sweep for Mandela's 67 minutes.
Kwa-Thema – The Masakhane Support Care Centre in conjunction with Modderbee Correctional Services brought parolees, probationers and recovering addicts to a mass clean-up campaign on Tuesday.
This was in commemoration of Mandela Day. The campaign took place at the Holiness Union Church in aid of the Ratanang elderly organisation.
They cleaned the yard and inside the premises, washed windows and cut the grass.
The PRO of Masakhane, Joshua Twala, said they wanted the beneficiaries of the church to meet in a clean environment.

“With our 67 minutes, we wanted to visit our pensioners while promoting the spirit of community involvement among our members, especially those who are in recovery mode. We wanted to give them something productive to do so they can keep busy,” said Twala.
A media liaison officer from the correctional services Abraham Malapane said, “Joshua is one of our parolees so when he proposed the idea we saw it fitting to support him and also to give motivation and encouragement to the other benefactors of this project,” he said.
The chairperson of the Ratanang organisation, Nomvula Sibanyoni, said they welcomed the visit.
She said this was a sign that pensioners are important within the community.
