ActionSA walks out of multi-party coalition

Kwatsaduza – The wheels are falling off in the DA-led multi-party coalition in the City of Ekurhuleni.

ActionSA has pulled out of the coalition citing that they are not going to continue to be part of the multiparty coalition government in the metro.

The party with 15 councillors in council previously occupied two out of nine MMC positions which include the MMC for Health and Social Development Charlotte Zitha and Community Safety which was occupied by Letlhogonolo Moseki.

This means the DA and its coalition partners do not have enough seats to form a majority government in Ekurhuleni.

The shaky grounds of the multi-party coalition were exposed three weeks ago when ActionSA chairperson in Gauteng, Bongani Baloi told the media that they intended to nominate their own mayoral candidate during the election of the new mayor.

Negotiations between the coalition parties led the party to support the re-election of Mayor Tania Campbell.
Campbell was re-elected after the negotiations between the ANC and EFF crashed.

ActionSA’s national chairperson Michael Beaumont confirmed that their councillors will not be part of the mayoral committee which was announced by Campbell on Tuesday.

Beaumont added that his party raised their concerns frequently for the refusal of the coalition to allow local structures to secure most of the support that could defeat motions of no confidence and pass service delivery budgets.

He added that going forward ActionSA will form part of a voting bloc that will work to keep the ANC out of the metro by defeating motions of no confidence.

“We will be working to pass decisions that serve the service delivery needs of the residents of Ekurhuleni,” he explained.
