Event to caution young soccer players about abuse
Soccer legends ready to fight GBVF in Kwa-Thema.
Kwa-Thema – As part of their social development programmes, the South African Masters and Legends Football Association will be joining the nation in the fight against the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide.
The association will be running an initiative to empower young male sportsmen under the age of 15 on December 9 at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex.
Chairperson of the association and former soccer player at the Witbank Aces, John ‘Bull’ Sibeko, said they are concerned about the alarming reported cases of GBVF.
“The perpetrators are getting younger with every case and this tells us that if we don’t step up to help groom these young boys then their future is doomed.
“These young men are going to grow up with anger and continue abusing women. We believe this can be turned around if we help now. We cannot continue teaching women how to avoid abuse while leaving the abusers behind,” he explained.
He added that they will be working hand in glove with the local football association to run their campaign.
“All the participants will sign a pledge to protect and not abuse women,” he added.
