Maths tutors placed at Langaville Secondary School

Learners encouraged to love maths from a young age.

Langaville – The Institute of Mathematics South Africa launched project Bokamoso to provide Grade Eight and Nine learners with mathematics intervention classes at the start of their high school journey.

Thirty tutors were selected and placed at Langaville Secondary School. They will start classes on February 6.

Tutor Chantel Magagula (20) said, “I want to help struggling learners and make them fall in love with mathematics. Hence I applied to be part of the tutors.”

Magagula completed her matric in 2020 and obtained level six in mathematics. She is now a Unisa student enrolled for teaching.

The Mathematics HOD at Langaville, Sheli Mofokeng, said, “We have been working with the CEO of the institute for years.

“He used to tutor our learners. I can confirm that he has produced a lot of engineers. We have a good relationship with him because he does this for free.”

According to Mofokeng, the programme will change many learners’ attitudes toward mathematics.

Mofokeng said the school is formally informing parents that their children will be home late because the project will take place in the form of afternoon classes.

“We live in a technological world where things change daily and rapidly. Children need maths skills so they can be IT specialists and do anything in technology in future.”

“Maths is the future,” said The Institute of Mathematics SA founder, Ntsane Masiloane.
