Maths genius set on making the subject less intimidating

Dr Sibusiso Mahlangu to be honoured at The 1st International Online Conference on Mathematics and Applications.

Kwa-Thema – Mathematician and medical doctor Sibusiso Mahlangu is reaching for the stars by crushing the stereotype surrounding the maths subject.

The 33-year-old has made history by solving one of the 60 equations that were deemed unsolvable by applying asymptotic maths.

His work discovery was approved by the Sciforum’s Scientific Committee and will be celebrated during the upcoming 1st International Online Conference on Mathematics and Applications from May 1 to 5.

Asymptotic math doesn’t limit one to use the same method to solve an equation as is the case with equal math.

Mahlangu said this is one of the biggest achievements in his career as he has dedicated himself to crushing stereotypes that the subject is difficult.

“I wanted to prove that anyone can excel in the subject if they dedicate themselves and treat mathematics as a language and not a subject. When learning a new language, you start by mastering the basics, you practice daily until you are fluent and even adopt the accent.

“This is the same with mathematics. You just have to stop treating it as a subject or a problem that needs to be solved,” he said.

He added that it pained him to see many students dropping the subject or being frustrated by the subject.

“This is because even the people teaching them are not passionate enough to make it easy for them. I then dedicated myself to changing their attitude by offering extra lessons for struggling learners.”
