Kwa-Thema Cricket Hub holds second mini-cricket festival

Cricket is not a common sport in the informal settlements.

The Kwa-Thema Cricket Hub hosted its second KFC Mini-Cricket Festival on Friday, and 12 local primary schools were invited to participate.

Mini-cricket provides a first taste of cricket to aspirant girls and boys.

A soft ball is used at the mini-cricket level, allowing children to enjoy participating in team sports. It also gives them the game’s basics like batting, bowling and fielding.

The learners rotated from one clinic to another at the sound of a whistle.

Phumla Nqakala, a teacher at Umsobomvu Primary School, said, “We want cricket skills to be developed in our schools to keep our children busy.”

Nqakala said when children have something to do, they don’t get involved in crime and drugs. Umsobomvu took some Grade Four and Five learners, aged nine to 11, to the festival.

Nokuthula Mhlungu, a teacher at Job Maseko Primary School, said, “Cricket is not a common sport in the informal settlements, therefore we brought our children because we’d like to see a future Makhaya Ntini from them, and I can confidently say we will have a cricket star from Job Maseko.”

The hub will join the regional KFC Mini Cricket Festival later in the year.
