Springs Home Sweepers coach determined to inspire young female players

Former female soccer players are challenged to coach the young players.

Kwa-Thema – Springs Home Sweepers FC coach, Bongi ‘Bebe’ Thela, aims to improve female soccer in Kwatsaduza.

The 37-year-old started coaching in 2018 with the Tsakani Ladies, but the team went under, so the following year, she joined the Springs Home Sweepers FC.

Thela said that during her days as a player, she was concerned that there were only a few female coaches.

Springs Home Sweepers FC coach is bringing the change she wants to see in female soccer.

“I identified that the players could not relate or be comfortable enough with their coaches to share some of their challenges. It affected their performance on the pitch.

“I vowed to be part of the generation to bring change to women’s soccer, and through coaching this team, I have started making my contribution,” she said.

Thela attended the Fifa Youth Coaching Course at the UJ Soweto Campus from March 13 to 17.

She said she encourages former female players to share their talents and skills with the young players.

“We need more women at the grassroots level to join us as coaches. I know we have a lot of talented former players who can bring major changes and growth to the sport.

“The time is now for us to bring the changes we yearned for when we were still players,” she concluded.
