Children and learners see themselves going far with para-sports

A sports day was held for paralysed children and learners

Kwa-Thema – The Kwa-Thema Disability Club hosted a skills and talent development day on April 22 at the Kwa-Thema Sports Complex.

The event aimed to recruit new players to the club and showcase to the parents and the community what the club does.

Club chairperson and coach Aubrey Mathibela said, “We identified and selected seven new players who will join the club.”

The learners had fun playing sports.

Mathibela said he was grateful to those who helped to make the day a success, especially Phelang Special School.

A teacher and sports co-ordinator at Phelang, Kedibone Masango, said she appreciated the day and that it was not often they went on school trips for sports, so this meant a lot to the learners and their parents.

Masango said they had forged a relationship with the club and would work together in the future.

Cerebral palsy (CP) soccer captain Scelo Mdluli said, “This day means a lot because we can show people that there is a lot of talent in the paralysed community.”

Coach Thabang Mokoke taught the attendees shot put.

Mdluli pleaded with the government to inject money into para-sports because they can do what others can.

Lerato Mashinini (16), from Phelang, said she learnt a lot and saw herself going far with CP soccer.

Sphesihle Modzanani (18), also from Phelang, said she was happy to be part of the programme and enjoyed playing soccer.
