Boxers take home lessons from event

The club hopes to be better prepared next time.

Kwa-Thema – Two Total Success Boxing Club boxers competed in the Development Tournament held at Bert Collins Boxing Club on Saturday.

All five regions in Gauteng participated in the tournament. Total Success’ Bakholise ‘Bhiza’ Matsheketo competed against Maloko Nzuzo from JD Boxing Club in Katlego informal settlement in the youth division.

Speaking to African Reporter, Bhiza said he was happy with his performance even though he lost on points.

“I could have fought harder in the first and second rounds, but I feel I learnt a lesson through it all. I am proud I fought till the last bell and gave it my best.

“This was my first time in the boxing ring, but come the next tournament, I will prove I am a champion,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mpumelelo ‘Ali’ Mqina fought Mike Gauws from TUT Pretoria West Boxing Club in the elite division (19 years and above) and was knocked out in the first round.

“I aimed to showcase my skills in the ring. Unfortunately, my opponent was better prepared. I am positive about my next fight and will do better,” Mqina added.

Team coach Lwazi Xundu said they take every match as a learning curve.

“Our boxers train and work hard, so do the other teams. We still have a lot of work to do and hope to overcome our next opponents,” he added.

The coach quoted a line from George Forman: “Boxing is like jazz. The better it is, the less people appreciate it.”
