Entities meet over rank’s cleanliness

Clr Njabulo Mbonani said the dumped rubbish will cause another blocked stormwater drain.

Langaville – Ward 79 Clr Njabulo Mbonani and a ward committee member responsible for the environment, Thomas Masha, met with the Duduza rank hawkers behind Ekhaya Shopping Centre on Tuesday.

The meeting addressed the rubbish at the rank, how to manage it and how it affects the community.

Mbonani said the stormwater drain at the rank was unblocked, but rubbish is still being dumped nearby, which would lead to another blockage.

“Animal carcasses and cabbage leaves are dumped next to the drain, and we are in the rainy season. Should the stormwater drain block again, we will have floods,” Mbonani said.

He said the rubbish attracts flies and the taxi drivers are complaining. There will be a follow-up meeting on Friday where the hawkers will select a committee among themselves to check whether other hawkers are keeping the area clean.
