Ekurhuleni East College student shines nationally

Sibande said they are delighted and honored to have one of their students representing them and Gauteng in national WorldSkills Competition.

Ekurhuleni East TVET College student Nhlanhla Sigentsu (19) from Kwa-Thema is determined to leave a mark in the 47th WorldSkills International Competition next year.

This comes after Sigentsu showcased her baking skills and talent. She had to undergo a series of tests to see who was the best among the other TVET students in the province.

Sigentsu was chosen as the top student in the province. She will travel to Durban in February next year to take part in the national WorldSkills South Africa (WSSA) competition.

“Through her hard work and dedication, Sigentsu proved she could represent our college and province in the nationals,” said Monique Sibande, head of the Department of Creative and Social Services.

“I am excited and grateful. I feel we equip students with knowledge, and at the end of the day, they move with these skills.”

Sibande added she is glad that Sigentsu is going through this intense process, which will provide her with the skills she needs.

“I am looking forward to seeing her carry through her career and post-competition. I am confident she will open a bakery after this.”

Sigentsu expressed that although she didn’t expect it, she felt overwhelmed by her advancement to the next stage.

“It is a great honour to be exposed to such a great opportunity,” said Sigentsu.

Sibande explained the competition is a worldwide movement aimed at advancing the skills of young people. It is represented across over 80 countries, mainly targeting vocational skills.

“As the TVET sector, we focus on vocational education, which means we are one focus of this competition,” said Sibande.

One legacy of the WorldSkills Competition is to give visibility and importance to professional education as one tool of socioeconomic transformation.

This ensures that young people can make a difference in their lives and within their respective communities.
