School readiness campaigns continue in Ward 74

Ward 74 committee members and community workers cleaned up Theo Twala Primary School.

Kwa-Thema – As school readiness programmes continue, the Community Work Programme (CWP) workers of Ward 74 and ward committee members cleaned up Theo Twala Primary School on Monday and Tuesday.

The schoolyard was full of overgrown grass and weeds, especially in the learners’ jungle gym area.

School principal Phumla Sehume said the readiness done by the workers is something they do yearly because of the school’s relationship with the community.

“We only have two general assistants at the school. Therefore, we needed the manpower to make things better and quicker. We are grateful for their help because we will be ready when the school reopens,” she said.

Keaorata Tsiane and Danisile Mncube sweep the pathway.

CWP supervisor Mpho Tabane said she is glad they could help the community because now they know the learners will return to a clean environment.

Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelane said, “This is part of the ward’s school readiness campaign. We’ve gone to all schools and assessed how the school might need the community’s assistance, and cleaning was one of the main areas.”

Simelane said they plead with parents to play a part in their children’s lives by helping them get emotionally ready for school.

“We don’t want situations whereby, come Wednesday, there are children already with absenteeism on their records,” he added.
