Duduza township turns 60 this year

The meeting will be at 17:30 on February 1 at the Sonqoba Clubhouse, 5006 Masilo Street, Duduza.

Duduza – As Duduza township turns 60 this year, the chairperson of Sonqoba Simunye Men’s Burial Club, Andy Mpye, believes that after decades of adversity and years of uncertainty, struggle and triumphs, it is time for the community to unite and celebrate, strengthening relationships and solidarity among community members.
Mpye said Duduza was established in 1964.

“The name means ‘to comfort’. This was to comfort the forced removal of the residents of the then Charterston location because the apartheid government considered it to be too close to a white town.

“It has been a turbulent six decades for a township that survived oppression. Duduza was one of the most highly active townships in the fight against segregation.”

According to Mpye, this significant township has been home to many notable academics, leaders, athletes, musicians, thespians, and citizens who withstood the worst of many struggles.

He said as a burial club, they will coordinate a meeting of all the stakeholders in the township.

“The purpose of the meeting is to launch Celebrating 60 Years of Existence, establish a local organising committee to prevent working in silos and reflect on the rich history of the township,” he said.

The meeting will be at 17:30 on February 1 at the Sonqoba Clubhouse, 5006 Masilo Street, Duduza.
