Menzi Primary School reads aloud
Fifty percent of Menzi Primary School learners can read with comprehension.
Langaville – Menzi Primary School observed World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday morning during the school assembly.
World Read Aloud Day is a day used to motivate people, mostly children, to read aloud. Learners read aloud different books – as individuals and in groups.
Menzi’s school principal Gladys Mavimbela, said they expected guests to celebrate the day with them, but they didn’t arrive. This, however, didn’t stop them from continuing with the celebrations.
Last year, stats revealed that over 80% of children in South Africa cannot read with comprehension.
Mavimbela said at Menzi the stats are at about 50% of Grade Four children who cannot read with comprehension.
She said this is mainly because learners in the foundation phase learn their subjects in isiZulu and transition to English when they get to Grade Four.
“It gets to be easier for them to learn at the foundation phase in Zulu as they get to understand and don’t fail,” she said.
She said celebrating such days helps with the improvement in reading.
“We also have a library where the learners borrow books. It is sometimes challenging as books are damaged or not returned,” she said.
Mavimbela said they also play the radio for Grade R learners at the school, to listen to Nali’Bali (story reading) programmes.
