Pros offer tips to amateurs

The programme is suitable for children as young as five and has no age limit.

Kwatsaduza – Mpumi Solani’s Bokamoso is bringing the best of Kwatsaduza’s acting industry together to empower new talent through a workshop.

Growing up in Kwa-Thema, Solani always knew she had big dreams, but they were derailed after she found herself on the Jozi streets aged just 13.

“I was homeless and on the streets until I was 16. I was sexually abused as a child and carried that scar throughout my life. In fact, I only received healing when I was much older and married,” she explains.

After confronting her past, Solani had a desire to understand why boys become perpetrators of abuse.

“I did a lot of research and interviewed men in prison, wanting to understand their situations. I found that most perpetrators experienced abuse when they were young.

“So I have a special place for boys, and I want to keep them safe,” she added.

While she was in Johannesburg, she managed to build her acting career.

“I know many people think you must be in Jozi or Soweto to make it as an actor. But those of us who have been there need to help the youngsters understand what is available out there.

“I thought of this workshop because I know, between us, there is so much wisdom. And we have to encourage the youth by telling our stories.

“If we can make it, they can too,” she explained.

The workshop will be on March 2 and 3 at the Kwa-Thema Skills School. Solani roped in Ramarumo Letjeko, Doddy Buthelezi, Elliot Sabelo Makhubu and Manare Mphela to facilitate.

The event is in collaboration with African Dish Productions.

The programme is suitable for children as young as five and has no age limit. All participants will receive certificates once they complete the workshop.
