Hospital marks TB Month with awareness campaign

Education can help to cure TB patients because many do not take their medication as prescribed.

Tsakani – Tuberculosis (TB) is curable, and the public needs to know that. That was the main message when Pholosong Regional Hospital staff visited Tsakane Mall to create awareness of TB.

It was one of the hospital’s activities to mark TB Month, commemorated annually in March. The team shared with the community the significance and effectiveness of adhering to treatment that can help prevent the spread of TB and expedite healing.

Facts about TB:
• TB is a disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis that is spread from person to person through the air.

• The symptoms include coughing (sometimes with blood), chest pains, weakness, weight loss, fever, and night sweats. If you have these symptoms, seek medical treatment.

• TB usually affects the lungs but can also affect other body parts, such as the brain, kidneys and the spine.

• If you complete your treatment, TB can be cured. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to minimise the disease’s spread and prevent severe complications and death.

If you stopped taking your medication, ask your local clinic to put you back on treatment as soon as possible.
