Young model ready to represent the country
Bakerton resident is a top 12 finalist of Mr India South Africa 2024.
His dream of being a model on the runway and in front of cameras became a reality for Bakerton resident Shailan Naidoo.
This 28-year-old’s dream began to take shape when he entered Mr India South Africa 2024, in August.
Although he does not have experience and this is the first official pageant, Shailan knew this was an opportunity he had to grab with both hands.
“As a young boy, I did not always believe I could be a model, due to ‘industry standards.”
As he grew up, he realised there are different types of modelling and as you embrace your uniqueness and beauty, there are a lot of opportunities to showcase this.
“For me, modelling is a bonus to my other creative interests, such as fashion, fashion design and art. This is why I enjoy it so much as it showcases the many efforts that go into a final look, which I would gladly partake in,” Shailan said.
He heard he was a top 12 finalist shortly after entering the competition. According to Shailan, he was in disbelief at first and says that being in the top 12 is an accomplishment he will treasure forever.
The Mr India South Africa pageant is known for its focus on helping contestants grow in many facets of their lives, by being inclusive of people from various backgrounds and circumstances.
“The purpose of this journey is not just about our outer beauty but our inner beauty as well and how we use it to grow ourselves.
“Throughout this journey, I have learnt how to be more confident in my abilities and strengths, but also how to identify and work on my weaknesses.
“I realised if you want to achieve anything, it is possible through hard work, perseverance, and self-belief.”
Shailan has always been interested in entering a journey where he could represent both his Indian heritage and South African nationality. He is more than just a pretty face as he works as an audit assistant manager at Deloitte in Midrand.
“I have always believed my personality and interests are equally divided into my creative side and my more analytical side. I, however, do not believe I need to be restricted to just one part of my personality, hence my efforts to pursue my creative and analytical interests.”
“If I were to hold the title of Mr India SA 2024, it would mean a great deal as a young Indian South African as I could use the position to represent my Indian and South African cultures, which I am both extremely proud to embrace.
“The title would also open up a gateway of opportunities to grow myself, professionally and personally.”
The grand finale will be on December 7 at the Sibaya Casino & Entertainment in Durban.
“Although this is the first competition of this nature I have entered, it certainly will not be my last.”
