CoE launches campaign to curb water use at car washes

The campaign not only promotes responsible water use but also assists car wash operators in complying with municipal regulations.

The City of Ekurhuleni has launched a proactive campaign encouraging car wash businesses to adopt water-saving practices as part of the city’s broader effort to promote sustainable water use.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Water and Sanitation, Clr Thembi Msane, is spearheading the initiative, which focuses on direct engagement with car wash operators across the city.

“The City of Ekurhuleni is committed to achieving zero water demand growth to remain within our water use targets. This will be achieved through improved water efficiency, reduced water losses, and the promotion of sustainable water use,” said Msane.

Msane noted that car wash businesses are significant contributors to water consumption and therefore play a vital role in water conservation.

“Through direct engagement, we aim to educate car wash operators on practical measures to conserve water while maintaining high standards of service,” she added.

The campaign not only promotes responsible water use but also assists car wash operators in complying with municipal regulations. The city is supporting these businesses with proper connection procedures to ensure legal access to water.

All car wash operators are required to apply for a water meter connection through the city’s finance and water and aanitation departments. Applications can be submitted at any local customer care centre.

Municipal officials are currently conducting site visits to car wash facilities throughout Ekurhuleni to verify water meter installations, confirm payment of municipal bills, and ensure compliance with the city’s water policy.

“The City of Ekurhuleni is committed to zero water demand growth. This objective will be achieved through improved water efficiency, reduced water losses, and sustainable water use,” reiterated Msane.

She emphasised that car washes are major water users and that their participation is critical in ensuring responsible water consumption.

“Through direct engagement, we aim to educate operators on water-saving measures that do not compromise service quality,” she said.
