Kwa-Thema cricketers shine nationally

Kwa-Thema’s Mpumi Mashiloane raised the local flag high after being invited to Cricket South Africa’s National Academy Camp, marking another milestone in her rising career.

Kwa-Thema – Local cricketers continued to grow their careers when they attended national cricket camps in June. Mpumi Mashiloane, already a familiar name in youth cricket, played in the U16 SA tournament in December 2023, where she was named player of the tournament.

When representing Easterns, she competed against several provincial teams and stood out as a top performer. A member of the Kwa-Thema Cricket Club, Mashiloane became the first player from the area to be recognised by Cricket South Africa. She was later selected to attend the National Academy Camp Games.

“I believe I was picked because of my stats. I’ve done well in the Jozi Cup, and I think that’s where they noticed me,” she said.

Mashiloane admitted last season was intense, and she was determined to keep improving.

“In the Jozi Cup, I scored three half-centuries that helped us win those matches. I also made a 130-run partnership with my provincial teammate recently,” she added.

Her sights are firmly set on a national call-up.

“I’ve worked hard, but I know I have to work smart too. Consistency is key, and I’ve been focused on physical fitness in the gym.”

Mashiloane said every opportunity she receives motivates younger girls who love the game.

“There are so many people who look up to me. If I make it, I make it for all of us.”

Owami Mahlangu (18) attended the Easterns camp for the second time.

“I had the same opportunity last year. We played four games and lost only one. I was happy with my stats, but I was especially proud of my fielding,” he said.

Although he didn’t make the final team, he valued the experience and the level of competition.

“These camps gather the most talented players, so it’s tough. This year, I’ve improved my ball control, especially while bowling. I’ve been intentional about bringing my best and showing up to every practice.”

Mahlangu added that he hopes to put Kwa-Thema Cricket Club on the map.

“That’s where my talent was developed, and I want to make the club proud.”
