Duduza’s Mabotle Mphuti fuses fashion with empowerment and community growth

From humble beginnings to community empowerment, Duduza stylist Mabotle Mphuti is redefining fashion with purpose—one design at a time.

DUDUZA – August is widely celebrated as Women’s Month – a time to honour women from all walks of life. Among them is Mabotle Mphuti, a creative and stylist who turned a difficult period in history into a platform for inspiration, style, and empowerment.

Mphuti officially launched her fashion brand during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, a time when the world came to a standstill.

Instead of letting uncertainty weigh her down, she used the time to rediscover her passion and bring meaning to the chaos through creative expression.

“My journey into fashion actually started long before the pandemic. It began in 2015 when I partnered with a friend. We bought clothes, customised them, and sold them to clients,” said Mphuti.

However, it was during lockdown that the spark reignited.

“When Covid hit, I had to find a way to keep myself busy – and what better way than through my passion? Regaining my love for fashion helped turn a tough period into an opportunity for growth,” she said.

Mphuti’s creativity and drive have since evolved into a thriving brand that reflects her personal vision and commitment to community empowerment. She believes fashion is more than just clothes – it’s a powerful form of self-expression.

“Fashion tells stories. It brings people together. That’s what inspired me to take this journey seriously,” she said.

Through her early experiences, Mphuti gained valuable insights into customer preferences, the retail environment, and the fundamentals of running a business.

“The skills and knowledge I gained in the beginning have been essential in building my brand and offering high-quality, creative designs,” she said.

“I draw inspiration from everyday life – from vibrant colours in nature to the street styles in my community. I stay curious, open to new experiences, and I keep growing through conversations, sketches, and even failures.”

She surrounds herself with fellow creatives and always stays true to her purpose. Mphuti has hosted several events to empower young women in her community and has styled music industry stars such as Lady Du and Cheryl Zondi.

In 2024, she took her mission further by launching the Kids Sip and Design Workshop, an initiative aimed at inspiring young minds to embrace creativity and self-expression through fashion.

“The workshop promoted self-expression, collaboration, critical thinking and confidence-building – all through fun, hands-on activities. We wanted children to explore their creativity and develop skills with long-term benefits,” she explained.

Beyond her love for design, Mphuti is a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment. She actively creates learning opportunities for aspiring creatives and hopes to one day run full-time classes in fashion, styling, and design.

“There is enough space for all of us in the creative industry. The best way to grow is by sharing the platform and educating one another,” she said.

Her advice for newcomers? “Start small, stay consistent, and never stop learning. Believe in yourself – every expert was once a beginner. Build strong networks, remain authentic, and be willing to adapt.”

Mphuti continues to shape her story in the creative world by branding and rebranding her venture. Her dream is to see her brand expand beyond townships to a global stage.

She is currently seeking sponsorships and support from businesses, individuals, and community members to help other creatives achieve their dreams.
