Meet Irene Sondezi, the heart of Pholosong Hospital
For many patients at the Pholosong Regional Hospital, Irene Sondezi is more than just a hospital staff member; she’s a beacon of hope, humour and healing.
Tsakani – The name Irene Sondezi stands out for Pholosong Regional Hospital outpatients. In fact, this name has become synonymous with humour, healing and care.
With 20 years of work experience that began as an internship, Sondezi consistently exceeds expectations, with patients applauding her dedication and sympathy.
Having worked in various departments at the institution, including the laundry, portering and records, Sondezi is familiar with the hospital’s operations.
She now works as a courtesy marshal in the quality assurance department. Once a patient at Pholosong herself, Sondezi said she knows how it feels to be in the patients’ shoes.

“I’ve been a patient in this hospital, admitted for different conditions, including asthma. I am standing today through the care I received from the staff of this great hospital.
“I feel obliged to add my voice to encourage patients that they, too, will be well if they comply with the prescribed treatment,” she explained.
Sondezi ensures that frontline healthcare services work successfully. She is intentional about ensuring that all patients are efficiently catered to and gives direction to ensure things run properly.
“Irene Sondezi is a ray of sunshine. She is always helpful and full of jokes. She is truly an asset to Pholosong,” said one of the patients, Delilah van Wyk.

Another patient, Selinah Makuwa, who came to the hospital in July for her sister’s check-up, said, “I was so down, but after Irene came to sing and preach, she healed me. I felt like attending the hospital’s morning prayers every day. It was so beautiful.
God bless her.” What distinguishes Sondezi is her steadfast character, greatly valued by those around her, her warm attitude, and her passion for her job.
She enjoys her daily tasks, never wastes a moment and is never idle. While each of us is called to a different path, Sondezi clearly understands hers and lives it with purpose and pride.
Her journey has not always been easy, and she has endured obstacles, as have many public servants. Despite it all, she has stayed steadfast.
“It’s not about recognition, it’s about impact,” she added.
