Kwa-Thema – The Pam Faku Foundation, in partnership with Local Lifestyle and the Kids Haven, recently donated much-needed goods to the Kopano Disabled Movement (KDM).

The organisation, managed by Kate Malope, aims to equip people living with disabilities by training them in beadwork, recycling, gardening, and crocheting and will soon add baking. They presently have approximately 50 beneficiaries.

“We want to ensure that people are not kept indoors with nothing to do and nowhere to go. We advocate for the inclusion of people living with disabilities in all spheres and help to amplify their lives.

“Whoever has a dream or talent, we want to ensure they get the platform they need to showcase it,” she explained.

May Seshoene from the Kids Haven in Benoni said the centre was established in 1992 to care for street children.

“Now, we have an aftercare programme and community initiatives. When the children finish school, they still need our help to establish themselves in adulthood.

“We do not have much, but whatever we have, we share with our community. We work with children, but when a pensioner is in need, we help where we can.”

Phooko Mokobung from Local Lifestyle said the establishment is always looking for ways to contribute to the community and that they could make the pub’s facilities available to train participants interested in DJing.

Event organiser Pam Faku thanked those who contributed to the donation.

“We respond to every need that surfaces in our community, and we will knock on every door to get people the help they need. I know we will return with more,” she said.

The KDM will host a fun walk/run on September 27 to raise funds for their choir to compete in a national competition later this year. The choir is also available to perform at events.
