Young karatekas excel at Women’s Cup Championship in Kwa-Thema
Karatekas from across Gauteng showcased their talent at the Women’s Cup Championship in Kwa-Thema, with local dojos scooping medals and proving that exposure and competition are key to growth.
Karatekas were given the platform to display their skills when the PASKF Shotokan hosted the Women’s Cup Championship at Kwa-Thema Hall recently.
“The championship was successful because we had four dojos participating: Tsakani, Brakpan, Delmas, and Lenasia. I am pleased with the standard of the participation,” said shihan Michael Cindi, the organiser.
From the Selcourt Dojo, Wethu Skosana, Thandolwethu Mohale, Ethan Pretorius, and Musi Ndimande were the most outstanding performers.
Sensei James Guliwe, founder of the Hirokazi Dojo in Tsakani under the IKSF, commended Cindi for hosting the championship.

“The only way our children will grow is through exposure and competition. I know they get nervous, but once they take the stage, they remember everything we teach them. I can see how, when they return from competitions, they are keen to learn new things,” said Guliwe.
From the Hirokazi Dojo, Amukelani Makhubela (15), Zenande Thusi (15), and Hlompho Sekabate (8) each won gold in kata and kumite in their respective categories. The dojo collected 10 medals at the event, even though some were competing for the first time.
“These youngsters have shown great commitment and respect. They are always punctual. I hope we will be able to help them reach greater heights and compete in the Olympics one day,” added Guliwe.
