Academy uses poultry farming to fight poverty

The Lord is There Academy held a poultry farming workshop in Tsakani to teach community members how to start and grow small-scale chicken businesses as a path out of poverty.

Tsakani – The Lord is There Academy recently hosted a poultry production management workshop at the Tsakani Customer Care Centre to train and teach Kwatsaduza community members about poultry farming.

Founder and chairperson of the academy, Thulani Soko, said poultry farming is a simple and affordable way to earn an income.

“Farming chickens makes money and does not require a large investment to start. Many people are not well-informed about this type of business and have little knowledge of how to begin. We want to encourage people to start their own businesses and grow as they learn,” he said.

The event received support from local stakeholders, including Ward 83 Clr Henry Buitendacht. Soko emphasised that they aim to teach more people about agriculture because many remain unaware of the opportunities it offers.

“Venturing into agriculture allows the unemployed to earn a monthly income. I aim to help people escape poverty by introducing poultry farming. An individual can make around R2 000 from 20 chickens, which can be managed as a backyard project,” he added.

He also invited the public to attend future training sessions, saying the academy is accredited in agriculture and open to partnerships.

“If anyone is willing to sponsor our initiative, we would be delighted,” said Soko.

Through these training programmes, the academy aims to eradicate poverty and empower residents. For enquiries or donations, call Soko on 078 450 3479.
