Ekurhuleni triumphs at SA U17 Badminton Championships in Bloemfontein

Ekurhuleni Badminton Association celebrated big wins at the SA U17 Championships in Bloemfontein, claiming gold in the team event and a silver medal for rising star Refiloe Tshabalala, who was also selected for the national team.

Duduza – The SA U17 Open and Inter-Provincial Badminton Championships, held from October 4 to 11, 2025, brought together some of the country’s most promising young players for an exciting week of competition and camaraderie.

The Ekurhuleni Badminton Association (EBA) proudly fielded two teams, Team A and Team B, featuring standout players Refiloe Tshabalala, Kamohelo Tombakwayo, and Kagiso Seloana from the Eyethu Badminton Development Club. Eleven provinces participated in the tournament, joined by a visiting team from Namibia, adding an international flair to the event.

Ekurhuleni’s Team A delivered a stellar performance, clinching gold in a nail-biting final against the Jozi Badminton Association, with the match decided by just two points.

Refiloe Tshabalala, who continues to rise as one of Ekurhuleni’s brightest talents, claimed a silver medal in the doubles event alongside 14-year-old partner Huei-Gin Chen.

Meanwhile, Team B secured a respectable 8th position in the team events, showing great spirit and determination throughout the tournament.

Adding to the celebrations, Tshabalala earned a well-deserved selection to the South African U17 National Team, a proud moment for both her and the association.

Eyethu expressed heartfelt gratitude to its sponsors – Imab Powers, Transvaal Galvanizer, Mbele and Sons Holdings, and KD Civils Pty Ltd – whose contributions made the self-funded trip possible.

Appreciation was also extended to Badminton South Africa, the Ekurhuleni Sports Confederation, and all stakeholders who continue to promote youth sports development in the region.

“These achievements are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our young players and the community that supports them,” said Roller Mongala, coach and EBA representative.

Training continues at the Duduza Multipurpose Centre, Monday to Friday from 15:30 to 18:00. For more information, contact Roller Mongala on 082 228 1792.

The success at this year’s championships underscores the growing strength of Ekurhuleni’s badminton scene and the bright future ahead for its young athletes.
