Ekurhuleni police arrest 147 suspects, shut down illegal shebeens in major district operation

SAPS and other law enforcement agencies intensified their operations across Ekurhuleni, removing firearms from the streets, shutting down illegal shebeens, and arresting scores of suspects linked to serious crimes.

Tsakani – As part of ongoing efforts to protect South African citizens, the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies in the Ekurhuleni Policing Precincts conducted operations on October 31 and November 2.

The operations targeted priority crimes across the district, reinforcing the authority of the state. Several firearms were removed from the streets, and 13 illegal shebeens were shut down. Detectives across Ekurhuleni arrested 147 suspects while tracing criminals on November 1.

“Among the suspects, 84 were arrested for contact crime, 17 for contact-related crime, 13 for property crime, 28 for other serious crime, and 17 for gender-based violence,” said Captain Neldah Sekgobela, Ekurhuleni SAPS district spokesperson.

On October 31, at around 13:16 in Tsakani, three off-duty members of the Trio Task Team received information about a firearm allegedly used in a recent shooting incident.

“The incident occurred on October 20 at around 21:00 in Langaville Ext 6 and involved four Lesotho nationals reportedly engaged in illegal mining activities. Three of the victims were shot and wounded, while the fourth was fatally injured,” Sekgobela explained.

Acting on the information, the members traced the suspect to his yard.

“He tried to flee but was apprehended and questioned. He then led police to his bedroom, where the firearm was found hidden on the roof with the serial number filed off. The suspect was taken to Tsakane SAPS for detention,” Sekgobela said.

Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended the members for their persistent efforts in the ongoing fight against crime and for their commitment to keeping crime levels to a minimum.
