Festive Cup combines competitive sport with community initiatives

Join the Festive Cup 2025 in Boksburg for thrilling football and netball competitions, a R200 000 prize pool, and events that celebrate local talent and community spirit.

Football and netball fever is set to sweep through Boksburg once again as the much-anticipated Festive Cup returns to WJ Clement Stadium in Reiger Park this festive season.

Scheduled over three weekends, November 29-30, December 6-7, and December 13-14, the event promises four days of competitive sport, community engagement, and friendly entertainment.

Established in 2015 in Reiger Park by The Mobile Lion PTY, the Festive Cup began as a series of indoor soccer tournaments across Gauteng.

“The tournaments were professionally managed, and their success led venue owners to request more events,” said Elrico Smith, director of the Festive Cup.

“As the tournaments grew, we built a substantial database of participating teams, giving us the confidence to expand into outdoor competitions.”

Smith said partnering with the Boksburg and Central Football Association, the Festive Cup has become a platform for local talent to shine, while also providing small businesses with opportunities to engage with the community.

“The event is about more than football. It’s about uniting the community, giving young people a safe environment, and inspiring the next generation of athletes.

“The tournament has grown significantly over the years. In 2023, 12 teams competed in each division, U19, over-35, and open, with a total prize pool of R60 000, alongside individual and team accolades.

“In 2024, the competition expanded to 16 teams per division, and the prize money doubled to R120 000, with 12 local SMMEs participating to showcase their products over the four-day event. This year, the prize pool increases to R200 000.”

He said the Festive Cup is not without its memorable moments.

“One highlight that captured attendees’ imagination was the dramatic entrance of the event mascot, who delighted children by arriving via helicopter during the grand finale,”” said Smith.

Smith emphasised that beyond the thrill of sport, the Festive Cup champions social impact.

“In 2024, funds were donated to a community outreach programme feeding the less fortunate and to a rehabilitation center focused on education and entrepreneurship.

“Looking ahead, the 2025 edition plans to reintroduce sports programmes to four primary and three secondary schools, while providing stationery and resources to support students’ academic development.

“The Festive Cup is about creating opportunities, celebrating talent, and bringing the community together. Through football, we hope to inspire young people to stay away from harmful influences, develop their skills, and showcase their potential,” said Smith.

With competitive matches, community-focused initiatives, and a family-friendly atmosphere, the Festive Cup 2025 promises to be a highlight of Boksburg’s sporting calendar, offering entertainment, inspiration, and unity for all who attend.
