SPAR National Netball Championships kick off with full readiness ensured

Organisers have confirmed that all safety, logistical and infrastructure preparations are complete as the SPAR National Netball Championships begin today at Dr EG Jansen High School in Boksburg.

The SPAR National Netball Championships officially start at Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen in Boksburg today (December 1), with organisers declaring complete readiness to host one of the country’s biggest annual netball events.

The tournament runs until December 6, bringing together districts from across South Africa for a high-intensity competition and national talent scouting.

During a press briefing on November 30, president of Ekurhuleni Netball Association Motlalepule Mmati, overseeing the event’s logistics, confirmed that all safety, infrastructure, and operational requirements for a national championship have been met.

This followed two weeks of preparation, during which weather disruptions posed a challenge to final arrangements.

“We are ready. We have worked tirelessly over the past two weeks, even though the weather at times delayed progress.

“Dr EG Jansen is one of the schools we have partnered with in the district, and our relationship has ensured a seamless process in meeting all hosting requirements.

“Our operations centre is in place, safety officers are deployed for the week, and the venue has been signed off for compliance. We cannot control the weather, but we can control our preparedness, and we are fully prepared.”

President of Netball South Africa Mami Diale explained that this year’s championships have drawn a record 114 teams from 52 districts, with 1 904 athletes set to compete.

“The senior division features 68 teams, including the Botswana national team, who are using the tournament as part of their preparation for the upcoming Africa Netball Cup in Malawi.

“Johannesburg return as defending champions in the U21 division, adding further anticipation to the competition.”

Dlale highlighted the importance of the championships in shaping the future of South African netball.

“This is one of the biggest tournaments on our calendar and plays a central role in talent identification. There is value in what we do here.

“The athletes selected this year will have opportunities to advance, including potential pathways into the Telkom Netball League.”

She said participation at this level is essential for progression

“The tournament will also observe key international awareness days. Today’s start coincides with World AIDS Day, and the event will mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, with several deaf teams participating once again.

“SPAR will continue to use the platform to promote its national campaigns against gender-based violence and period poverty.”
