Tsakani – In light of ongoing unsolved violent crime cases in Kwatsaduza, CPF chairperson Mncedisi Somyo has raised concerns over a rise in robberies targeting places of worship, particularly during services.

Somyo said criminals often enter churches pretending to be congregants before launching attacks.

“In most of these cases, robbers come into the church as worshippers. When the service is underway, they produce firearms and rob people of their cellphones, handbags, and car keys.

“In some instances, vehicles parked outside are also stolen,” he said.

He warned that these incidents mirror a broader pattern of violent crime in the community, where criminals exploit spaces traditionally regarded as safe.

“This is linked to the same issue we see in other crimes affecting women and children. Criminals feel emboldened because cases are not being resolved quickly.

“When there are no consequences, crime escalates,” Somyo said.

Somyo urged religious leaders and congregants to adopt proactive safety measures, including appointing visible safety marshals, monitoring entrances and parking areas, and avoiding displaying valuables during services.

“Churches must work closely with the CPF and police. Simple measures like controlled entry points, awareness of unfamiliar faces, and ensuring that vehicles are guarded can make a difference,” he advised.

Somyo further encouraged residents to report suspicious behaviour immediately and not to assume that someone else will do so.

He added that community cooperation, coupled with effective investigations, remains key to restoring safety and trust.
