Kwa-Thema – The Kristo Inkosi Catholic Church marked National Police Day (January 27) with a prayer service for members of the security cluster on Sunday.

Church chairperson Rama Mokgaswane said the service acknowledged the risks faced by those who keep communities safe.

“This is our way of acknowledging that security cluster members risk their lives daily to serve us. We pray for God’s protection over their lives and families.

“Every time they leave their homes, they do not know if they will return safely,” said Mokgaswane, referring to members of the SAPS, the EMPD, CPFs, the South African National Defence

Force, the Correctional Services, community patrollers and private security companies. Mokgaswane said they also prayed for moral strength and integrity among officers.

“We prayed that they will resist any temptation of corruption and have the strength to do what is right in every situation,” he said.

He explained that the Justice and Peace programme within the Archdiocese of Johannesburg advocates for social transformation in partnership with the government and civil society organisations, while contributing to greater justice within local communities.

“We promote peace and justice for all people, regardless of race or religion,” he added.

He emphasised that the church has a strong relationship with the local security cluster and appreciates their involvement in church programmes.

“I believe their presence deters young people from involvement in criminal activities. They also equip us to contribute to building a peaceful community.”
