Man jailed 15 years after blood delivery driver hijacking
A Springs police officer’s investigation leads to the arrest and sentencing of a man involved in a highway kidnapping and extortion case.
Springs SAPS station commander Brigadier Raymond Buthelezi commended Warrant Officer Shadrack Masiloane for securing a 15-year sentence for a 33-year-old man accused of kidnapping, robbery and extortion.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane said Sihle Mabaso was among three suspects wanted in connection with an incident that occurred on June 11, 2024. Masiloane’s investigation led to his arrest, while the two other suspects are still at large.
“The complainant was travelling on the N12 near the Etwatwa off-ramp, in a company vehicle transporting blood to various health facilities.
“Along the route, he was stopped by three men, one of whom was armed with a firearm. The suspects demanded money and instructed the complainant to contact his employer to transfer funds,” Zwane said.

She explained that the suspects alleged they were members of the Benoni Taxi Association and claimed the vehicle had outstanding fines.
“The complainant’s employer subsequently transferred money as instructed. He was then taken to Daveyton Mall, where he withdrew an amount of R2 500, which was handed over to the suspects,” she said.
Through Masiloane’s investigation, Mabaso was traced using a vehicle registration number and was later arrested in Daveyton.
“The suspect was positively identified by the complainant during an ID parade,” Zwane said.
Mabaso was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery, five years for extortion and five years for kidnapping on April 14. These sentences will run concurrently.
