EMPD, SAPS arrest 33 illegal miners at Tsakani dumping site operation

A joint operation by EMPD, SAPS and private security led to the arrest of 33 undocumented foreign nationals at an illegal mining hotspot in Tsakani.

Tsakani – The EMPD Intervention Unit, in conjunction with the SAPS Illegal Mining Unit and Quattro Security Company, arrested 33 foreign nationals in the Tsakani area on March 5.

“A joint illegal mining operation was conducted at the Vlakfontein old mine dumping site.

“Members tactically approached the identified hotspot and successfully disrupted an active illegal mining operation, leading to the arrest of thirty-three suspects,” explained CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

Illegal mining equipment, such as picks, pendunkas, water pumps, spades, hammers, and gas cylinders, was confiscated during the operation.

“Officers requested the suspects to produce identification documents or passports, which they all failed to produce,” he said.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 46, were arrested and detained at Tsakane Police Station, facing charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.

They are expected to appear before the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court soon.
