Lighthouse career expo equips Springs youth for life after school

Learners and out-of-school youth explored career options, received CV guidance and received practical advice from industry professionals during the three-day programme.

Lighthouse Community Centre hosted its third annual career expo from July 9 to 11 to empower youth with information to help them make informed decision about their futures.

The three-day occasion focused on CV drafting, company and higher institution exhibitions and informative presentations from industry experts.

It was well attended by learners from Springs and Kwatsaduza, who had the opportunity to engage with various professionals.

One of the coordinators, Duduzile Dlamini explained the importance of helping learners with university applications.

“There are learners who do not have access to laptops to complete their university applications. Day three is about providing them with access to the necessary resources, as well as guidance from experts to help them through the process,” she said.

Mahlatse Mantsho (16) from Nigel High School said he left the event feeling more knowledgeable on the workplace requirements.

“I learned that you don’t have to add your picture to your CV because it’s unnecessary. Regarding applying for higher education, I found out about an agricultural college which I didn’t know about before the event,” he said.

Co-coordinator Mahlale Mokoena said the expanded format now caters for both learners and out-of-school youth through workplace readiness sessions, career guidance and opportunities to engage directly with professionals.

“We wanted relatable people who can talk about the industry and give them a real in-person experience,” he said, adding that the sessions allow young people to ask practical questions and better understand different career paths.

“Our dream is seeing young people being informed and involved. You plant a seed and the tree will grow,” Mokoena said.
