Kwa-Thema – Kutlwano Social Organisation (KUSO) recently commemorated Mandela Day by dedicating more than 67 minutes to serving the Kwa-Thema community through initiatives aimed at restoring dignity and uplifting vulnerable residents.

The organisation hosted two outreach programmes focused on supporting senior citizens and improving learning environments on July 18.

KUSO, together with community leaders and sponsors, distributed blankets, hot soup and bread to elderly residents at the Kwa-Thema Community Hall.

“The programme was designed to provide warmth, comfort and dignity to senior citizens during the winter season,” said organisation PRO, Matshele Motlhabane.

The event was attended by MMC for Community Safety, Jongizwe Dlabathi, who addressed beneficiaries and commended the organisation for its commitment to community service.

KUSO volunteers then turned their attention to Kenneth Masekela High School, where they painted and cleaned parts of the school to create a more welcoming and dignified environment for learners and educators.

The organisation says its commitment to service will continue beyond Mandela Month. Deputy chairperson Kagiso Sithole said Mandela Day should inspire people to serve their communities every day.

“Mandela Day is not just about 67 minutes. It is about living the values of Ubuntu every day. We thank our volunteers, sponsors, partners and MMC Dlabathi for standing with us,” he said.

“Because of you, we brought hope and dignity to those who need it most. And our work does not stop here.”

KUSO expressed its appreciation to all sponsors, donors, volunteers and community members whose support made the Mandela Day activities possible, saying collective action continues to strengthen and uplift communities across Gauteng.
