Be not your thoughts, be the observer of your thoughts.
As human beings we find it hard to connect with a part of ourselves that is being attacked by people around us.
We often hurt those we love without the intention to do so. At times when people do not agree with us we think their intention is to harm us when most times they want to empower us.
This self-awareness can perhaps solve many problems in our relationships and in our society.
We need to learn to notice our thoughts and feelings which is the core being of who we are.
The core being of who you are is also the inside that has never been touched by anyone but you.
It is the place that you share with only the higher being and no-one else.
Being aware of yourself means being able to step out of an emotional situation and be able to observe how you react to it.
This can help decrease violence, conflict and misunderstandings in our homes and even society in general.
Observing other people’s thoughts is easier than observing yourself.
For example, a friend asking for help when he or she is going through an emotional situation compared to yourself when going through one.
This can help to also better manage our daily stress, emotions, anxiety and stress.
Observing your thoughts though does not mean the best way you can have a healthy mind is by not accepting those things that just wont change.
Marcus Aurelius in his book “The Power of Emotional Detachment” says: “the happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts: therefore, guard accordingly, and take care that you entertain no notions unsuitable to virtue and reasonable nature.”
This quote empowers us to improve the quality of our thoughts so we can be more happy human beings.
Do not entertain thoughts that want to limit you in life,”I am overweight, I am not good enough, I am a failure and I wont ever mount to anything”.
These type of thoughts are not a representation of who you are or even who you want to be in life whether they are habits or not.
It is also what we make of the information we receive when observing our thoughts that can help us understand who we are.
Being a victim of not observing my thoughts in the past I used to be someone who was very quick to be upset without analysing the situation at hand.
I only would observe my thoughts at a later stage when the damage was already done.
Through time though I have managed to change this behaviour as I realised it was not a reflection of who I am.
Ever since I have been observing my thoughts, I have made freedom and peace with who I am and now I am content with what I have.
Thoughts are ideas and opinions we produce by thinking every day, they help us believe, conceptualise, interpret and make perceptions with good reasoning with ourselves and the world around us.
They are the most fundamental activity a human being participates in on a daily basis.
We have also seen a testament from Oprah Winfrey’s life through the things she achieved.
She also confesses to be the observer of her thoughts from a young age when she discovered education was going to be her escape out of poverty.
She explains in her interviews in the “Life Class” show that she observed her mistakes as a child by falling pregnant at such a tender age.
She learned to be an independent woman and also make sure she does not repeat the same mistakes in her adult life.
Even when she auditioned for the film “The Color Purple” for the character “Harpo”, she says her faith was tested by God in every aspect.
She learned through that experience that even though she wanted to play the character so badly because it was her life story, it did not mean it was the end of the world.
She adds: “if only I observed my thoughts and managed to take myself out of the stress I put myself under by looking at the bigger picture”.
Our thoughts are not only fundamental yet they are the most precious moments in our lives that we take for granted.
So many of us wake up each morning with a scheduled mentality of bathing, eating breakfast, going to work or school, coming back home and then sleeping.
This is a bad habit because we are being ignorant observers of our thoughts by not analysing what we can do differently on a daily basis to improve our lives and even achieve our goals.
Remember this, Repetitively and even Eternally.
