Two youngest players in SAB League

The two youngest players who play in the SAB League are from KwaThema.

Sandile Mahlangu and Bheki Mabena who are both 15 years old are the youngest players to graduate to play at a semi- professional league level. They both graduated from the U17 team of Ayoba-Yo-Youth Soccer Academy last year and started to play in the SAB League. Sandile says he got involved in sport when he joined the cricket team at the age of seven. He says after he was injured on his left hip when he was playing with his friends on the street at the age of eight, he decided to quit cricket to become a soccer player. Sandile joined Ayoba at the age of 10 and he played for the U11 team until he graduated to U15 then joined the U/17 team until his last promotion to the SAB League. He says playing with the players who are older than he, does not challenge him as he believes that age does not matter as much as the experience and the skill that one has in soccer. Sandile says one day he wants to become one of the international soccer stars. Bheki Mabena says his mother realised that he is good in soccer when he was six years old as he used to play with his friends and neighbours on the township’s streets. He says when his mother registered him at the academy he fell deeply in love with soccer and knew that he would go far with it. “At the age of 15, I am already playing at a semi-professional level and I believe that when I am 18 years old I will be playing at a professional level,” confidently concludes Bheki.
