Rugby festival aimed at empowering women

Female rugby players urged to participate in the Zimbali rygby festival.

Kwatsaduza – Zimbali rugby festival makes a comeback.
The development programme for female rugby players will take place on May 14 at the Gauteng Women’s Rugby Institute (GWRI), in Springs.
It is hosted by Valke Rugby Union in conjunction with GWRI.
The festival was established in 2019 by the City of Ekurhuleni’s Sport and Recreation department, however, due to Covid-19 and funding issues the event was then placed on hold.
Valke development manager and the event organising committee member Jaco Cotzer said it was crucial to keep the festival alive.
“Through the festival, we can allow more young players to pursue rugby as a career.
“We also get to see how many female players are still active within the region so that we can plan better,” he said.

To participate in the festival you must be a female rugby player who is a beginner, intermediate or well-established player.
“Female rugby has exploded over the last three, four years and we would like to give an opportunity for all female rugby players to participate in a festival of rugby games.
“We will also use this opportunity to select a high-performance training squad.
“All players will be divided into regional teams so that we can build club rugby and school rugby as well.
“This will help with training as a team instead of always just playing as individuals,” stated Cotzer.
The age groups for the festival are u-15, u-16, u-18, u-20 as well as seniors.
Interested parties can fill out an entry form via the Valke Ladies Facebook page or can contact Cotzer on 074 189 2349.
