A good watch for younger viewers

DVD: The Mortal Instruments: city of Bones. Reviewed by: Samantha Keogh Review made possible by: NuMetro

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is a great watch for the 10 to 14 year old audience for which it was undoubtedly made.

The innocence of the romance and comparatively “light” violence option make this a great movie which touches on the elements needed to make the story pop without being overly graphic.

I must clarify here that the movie is not without the suggestion of violence, but what is seen is relatively innocent with little blood and guts being seen on screen.

The movie is based on the book series The Mortal Instruments which is a series of six young adult fantasy novels written by Cassandra Clare.

Seemingly ordinary teenager Clary Fray finds out, on the eve of her 16th birthday, that both she and her mom are in fact Shadowhunters – a secret cadre of half-angel warriors locked in the unwinnable battle to protect the world from demons for all eternity (although Shadowhunters are not immortal).

Clary’s mother has had a witch performing regular mind altering spells on her to ensure that she has and continues to forget what and who she is.

That is until she starts seeing ruins in her everyday life and her mother goes missing without telling Clary what she is and what it means.

Clary is left confused and in the hands of Jace, a shadow hunter who has tracked her down and is the only link she has to her mother and the cup it will take to get her mother back.

Filled with all sorts of interesting characters, this a movie aimed at the younger viewer but can equally be enjoyed by older viewers – if they care to suspend their negativity and disbelief for the two hours it takes to enjoy this movie.
