There area number of issues to keep in mind and to check while travelling:

  • Do not consume any alcohol during the trip.
  • An overheated or very cold vehicle can compound the fatigue effects.
  • If possible, have another person driving with, to have someone to talk to and who can share the driving.
  • Make sure to get enough rest when not driving.
  • Boredom can also cause fatigue, therefore music, radio or conversation is helpful.
  • Switch on the vehicle’s headlights.
  • Drive according to the road conditions.

It takes a lot of skills to drive in wet weather conditions and gravel roads.

If it is raining, misty or the road is congested, reduce speed.

  • Check the road signs and obey the speed limit at all times
  • Always drive with your doors locked and windows wound up, especially when stopped at traffic lights.
  • Do not leave anything valuable on show in your car when you leave it unattended, and always lock your car when you leave it, even if you are only going to be gone for a few minutes.
  • Try to always park in a busy, well-lit area.
  • Do not confront aggressive or abusive road users.
  • If possible avoid travelling at night or in remote areas.

Look out for the following warning signs when driving:

  • Yawning constantly.
  • Reactions slow down.
  • When feeling stiff or the eyes feel heavy.
  • When daydreaming.
  • The vehicle wanders over the centre lane or onto the edge of the road.

If any of these warning signs are noticed, stop for a rest.

Follow the following rest stop precautions:

  • stop at a roadside rest area.
  • If it’s after dark, find a lighted area in which to park.
  • Get fresh air, but make sure the windows are closed enough to prevent entry from the outside.
  • After the rest, get our of the car and walk for a few minutes.
